Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to FAQs about BrightEarth’s mosaic imagery.

How recent is the satellite imagery used in BrightEarth’s mosaic imagery?

Most images used in BrightEarth’s mosaic datasets are from within the last 12 months. Occasionally, the AI algorithm uses older images to stitch together a cloud-free mosaic. In all cases, the most recent images possible are used.

What is the source of BrightEarth’s remote sensing imagery?

BrightEarth uses satellite imagery from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellites. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission uses a constellation of two polar-orbiting satellites placed in the same sun-synchronous orbit, phased at 180° to each other. Its 290 km swath width and high revisit rate makes it an ideal source for monitoring changes on the Earth's surface.

Will BrightEarth mosaic imagery integrate with my GIS mapping software?

Yes. After selecting an area of interest (or even the entire planet’s surface), you can download a raster dataset which can be used in all popular GIS software. It is also possible to stream files to third-party applications via XYZ file protocols.

What is mosaic imagery in mapping?

When we build maps using satellite images, we must stitch together a ‘mosaic’ of several images of the planet’s surface. Mosaics attempt to combine the best possible images (i.e. without clouds) at the highest possible resolution, so that the mosaic represents the planet’s surface in a uniform, clear and easy-to-understand way. At LuxCarta, we’ve drawn on 30 years’ experience of creating mosaics and used millions of images to train our AI algorithm to create mosaics quickly and reliably.
